The Evolving Power Yoga Workouts

The start of modern yoga begun in 1927 which Krishnamacharya has started. His approach included the flowing movements and the accelerating, graded routines which continue to challenge even the most advanced health buffs. A loyal students of Krishnamacharya, Pattabhi Jois has pioneered the power yoga workouts until it was brought to the west by the American Bryan Kest.

The power yoga workouts have deviated from the typical Ashtanga yoga as it was known and was promoted by Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois. The name 'power yoga' was first used by Berryl Bendere Birch, the author of a power yoga book. Power yoga workouts done in many gyms today have been extremely modified. Lunges like the Warrior poses and the extended side angles are repeatedly done in many routines. What makes this approach appealing is the way a lot of aspiring yogis can manage to follow and perform the asanas.

Just like any workout routine, power yoga workouts always start with a warm-up which should stretch the muscles to condition it and prevent possible injuries. An important part of the tradition of Ashtanga yoga is doing the Sun Salutation Pose. The power yoga proper consists of a series of yoga poses or asanas and movement or vinyasa which are synchronized to one's breathing. If done with a yoga music or acoustic, the result is a graceful movement which is an expression of balance and harmony not only of the body but also of the mind. The tempo of the music helps set the speed of the motions. The asanas need to be held for more than five breaths to improve strength and while the shifting from one asana to the next is done smoothly.

Even with all the modifications in the routines of the power yoga workouts, there are yoga goals which must be set and achieved which is the oneness of mind, body and spirit. Asanas develop the body. The mind is cleared with the relaxation and cleansing which go with the practice. While the spirituality drives the commitment towards the path of a disciplined life replete of health, balance and harmony.
